We received an email from a woman named Nora a few months ago.
The email said:
“My father is on a Texas Plus HMO Classic – Medicare Advantage plan that is not in Network with M.D. Anderson Cancer Center where his oncologist and family would like for him to go for a second opinion on inoperable metastasized colon cancer (mid liver). PCP Office called to say he was in not in the network. Is there any way for us to protest this, so the insurance allows this visit? Please help with any guidance or direct us to other resources.”
At the time, Nora and her father weren’t clients, but we tried to help them in any way we could.
I HATE to get these emails. It happens all too frequently because unfortunately, there wasn’t anything we could do to help him.
Nora’s dad clearly wasn’t told the whole story on Medicare and is now in a terrible position. Due to insurability rules around supplement plans, he won’t be able to afford to switch into a plan that will cover his treatment at M.D. Anderson.
Since 2010, when the Medicare Coach first started, we have met so many people and have seen nearly all the possible Medicare mistakes possible.
Too many people oversimplify Medicare or trust the wrong people to help you make a decision, and it turns into a disaster. Just like Nora and her dad, and the hundreds of other horror stories we’ve heard.
At the Medicare Coach, we have taken what we’ve learned from others mistakes and guide you around those mistakes, so you do what’s right for you.
