I often see that those who regret their Medicare decision, are the ones who optimistically made their Medicare decision when they were healthy.
That is because they didn’t necessarily think about Medicare from a long-term perspective when health problems will likely arise.
I recently worked with a client who did just this. Five years ago, she made her Medicare decision based on her current health situation, when she was healthy. She didn’t take any medications or have any pre-existing conditions, so she chose an inexpensive Medicate Advantage plan.
She was recently in a terrible car accident and needs lots of rehabilitation and therapy services. The problem is, none of the facilities in her area that provide these services will accept her Medicare Advantage plan.
That’s why the biggest mistake that I see healthy people make when it comes to Medicare, is not realizing the long-term impact of their initial Medicare decision.
Due to Medicare insurability rules and guarantee issue rights, it can make it hard, if not impossible, to move into certain plans when you do need that health insurance.
So, when you don’t think about the long-term scope of your Medicare coverage, you’re risking getting the best coverage for yourself in the future.
I hope you’re healthy for your entire life, but we have insurance for the days that we aren’t, so I want you to be taken care of today and in the future.
It’s not realistic to look at your health as if you’ll always be healthy. We don’t know what our health future holds, so be thoughtful about this when picking your Medicare plan.
A cheaper plan could money in premiums now but could end up being extremely costly down the road or leave you without the care and services you need.
