When you approach Medicare, there are so many options. When I was helping my dad sort through the options, I was so overwhelmed. I merely wanted to make the right decision.
One thing I did, and so many others do too, is to go towards the insurance companies I was familiar with. Insurance companies I’ve heard about through commercials, doctors offices, or friends.
But this is one of the biggest mistakes I and many others make when it comes to Medicare. While some companies who do traditional health care also do Medicare, the game being played is different, and there are many great Medicare plans you likely haven’t heard of.
There’s a process to follow to make the right Medicare decision which I talk about this 5-step process in detail in my free online workshop. This process does not include defaulting to the better know insurance names.
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is they assume that the companies that they’re familiar with in the past, or the companies, they’ll be best for them in the future.
I think about Ken in this situation. Ken lives in Illinois, and he’s had a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan for decades. So when he went to Medicare, he assumed that he should remain in a Blue Cross plan for many reasons including that’s the plan that his doctor accepts.
While Blue Cross can be a good option for certain people, it was not the right Medicare option for his situation.
When you make assumptions on the insurance companies without doing the research, you can end up wasting so much money.
To find the company that is best for you, it’s important to look at things like:
- The history of the company.
- The quality of their customer service.
- Are they likely to have rate hikes in the future?
- How are their contracts prices?
The process will have slight differences whether you are picking a supplement, Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, but there many standard aspects to look at when choosing an insurance company.
