The Big Problem With Medicare Advice

It seems too frequently that people come to me and say, “I’ve made a mistake, can you help me out of it?”

Medicare mistakes can be extremely costly and even irreversible, so I want to share with you how to avoid getting bad advice so that you can avoid these costly mistakes.

It’s easy to avoid bad advice if you know the steps to take and what to look for.

First, I want to share Cindy’s story.

Recently, I was working with Cindy, and she told me that when she was about to join Medicare, she and her husband went to their local Medicare person to get advice.

After their meeting, she and her husband were confident in their Medicare decision based on this advice.

Cindy then signed up for a plan she thought was best for her. However, a few months into this plan she started to realize how expensive her medications were and had no idea why.

That was when Cindy came to The Medicare Coach for help. She wanted to know what she could do to lower these costs. What I discovered was that the advice she had been given was incorrect and not the best for her.

The good news is because she came to us within days of joining Medicare we were able to reverse everything she had done.

Not everyone is this lucky.

Due to insurability rules in most states, you can’t switch plans whenever you want to. Most people don’t realize they’ve made a mistake until it’s too late.

So, how can you make sure you’re not getting bad advice? How do you make an informed decision so you can do what’s right for you?

First, start by talking with your doctor.

If you want to be able to see your doctors once you are on Medicare, make sure your doctors will accept the Medicare program you pick (Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage).

Many people getting distracted by shiny options in Medicare plans and don’t realize that they are giving up the ability to see their preferred doctors. If you keep this in mind, you can avoid one of the main Medicare mistakes.

Second, when you are ready to look at specific insurance company plans, make sure you are getting independent, unbiased advice.

Nearly all of the people talking to you about Medicare plans are getting paid by insurance companies to sell their plan. Therefore, they make recommendations that pay them the most money even if it’s not best for you.

Get guidance from a Medicare expert who is NOT receiving any money from insurance companies is the key to knowing you are making the right decision for your situation.
