The number one question we get at the Medicare Coach is, “I am currently covered under insurance through work, what do I do about Medicare?”
This is an excellent question because so many people are working after 65, or are covered under their spouse’s employer insurance.
Now, a few rules and factors play into whether or not your current health insurance is creditable to delay joining Medicare when you turn 65. Still, the thing is, just because you can delay joining Medicare, doesn’t mean you should.
We have seen that Medicare can provide better and more affordable coverage than some employer plans. However, I always recommend comparing your employer plan to Medicare to see which is best for you and your situation.
I know that many of you are happy with your current employer’s health insurance, and you’re nervous or skeptical about what Medicare coverage would look like.
If you are in this boat, I want to put you a bit at ease.
First off, I want to let you know that Medicare can absolutely be as good, if not better, than most health insurance plans out there.
Unfortunately, Medicare gets a really bad rap for many reasons. The main reason is that people pick a Medicare plan not really understanding how that plan works, and it ends up being an absolute mess.
I also want people to know that you don’t have to keep working just because you’re scared of Medicare. You should be working because you either want to work or because you need the income. I always hate when I see people delaying retirement to hold on to that health insurance.
Medicare can be fantastic, and for most people, it’s going to be cheaper and have better coverage than your current health insurance.
There are plans out there that cover your doctors that have low out-of-pocket costs, low co-pays and that protect your overall retirement savings. And plans that still give that flexibility to see the doctors that you want.
Medicare can be great. We see how well it can work for our clients every single day.
