Over the years, one of my most dreaded moments is when I got my packet from my employer asking me to pick out my health insurance plan for the upcoming year.
Most of the time, I never really understood what it was. Of course, I hoped I’d be healthy, but I knew that I could switch it every year.
Many people have this same mentality when they go to enroll in Medicare.
The reality is Medicare is not as simple as just picking a plan that works for you now.
When you first join Medicare, the plan you pick will likely be your Medicare plan for the rest of your life.
One of my old neighbors emailed me a few weeks ago and said that she was diagnosed with cancer, and for some reason, she was paying thousands of dollars out of pocket for the cost of her chemotherapy.
She had no idea why her Medicare plan wasn’t covering it. She wanted to know if there was a way that I could help her to get into a Medicare plan that would cover her treatments.
Unfortunately, she made some really big mistakes when picking her Medicare plan and wasn’t aware of how Medicare works when she first joined.
She did not realize the many rules of Medicare and what things to consider when picking out a plan.
I know that the marketing and advertisements you see from insurance companies make Medicare plans look very much the same as other healthcare insurance. This makes you think you can approach Medicare the same way you have your past employer insurance, but that’s not the case.
When it comes to picking out Medicare, there’s a proven process that we created here at The Medicare Coach that you can follow to help you no matter what your situation is.
Step 1: Knowing when to join Medicare to avoid penalties and overpaying for health insurance.
Step 2: Knowing which Medicare plan fits you best based on things like your doctors, lifestyle, state of residence, etc.
Step 3: Picking a plan, company, and supplement letter. This is based on your medications, your zip code, and other things of that nature.
Step 4: Making Medicare official. You’ve picked out your plans that fit your unique situation – now it’s time to enroll.
Please do not just pick a Medicare plan because you want to be done with it. Instead, please follow this proven process to help you easily make your right Medicare decision.
