There is one thing that most people don’t know about Medicare plans: they’re not all created equally.

As you likely know, as soon as you turn 64, you start getting insurance mailers about Medicare plans, and you start seeing more and more commercials about them. Even your family and friends are talking about their Medicare plans.

Here is the thing, most people assume that all of these different Medicare plans are very similar.

I am here to tell you that isn’t true.

I’ve had people come to me in tears because they made the wrong Medicare decision. Most times they are frustrated that their current plan is costing them so much money in premiums or co-pays or they aren’t able to see their chosen doctors because of network restrictions.

This is why you must find the plan that best fits your unique situation and circumstances as you go into your Medicare decision.

Now the question is, how do you do that?

There are a handful of things that I look at when I’m helping clients decide which coverages are best for them, but the main three are:

1. Be sure you understand what type of Medicare plans your current doctors accept.

2. Assume that if you were to have serious health issues tomorrow, like cancer, what doctor do what do you want to see? Including facilities and what types of Medicare do they accept.

3. What types of medications are you currently taking?

Here is the thing, due to insurability rules, you might not be able to change plans in the future.

So, you need to be sure the doctors you want to keep seeing, the doctors you’d like to see if health issues arise, and what medications you currently take are taken into consideration when you’re looking at Medicare plans.

Again, not all plans are the same. You’ll be very disappointed in coverage and spend way too much money on your health care if you don’t make the right choice for your unique situation.
