WHEN SHOULD I SIGN UP FOR MEDICARE

Clients continue to be confused about signing up for Medicare….
If you are drawing social security prior to age 65, you will automatically receive your Medicare Part A and B card in the mail about 3 months prior to your 65th birth month.  If you are still working and want to stay on your employer’s group health plan, you will need to go to the nearest Social Security office and disenroll in Part B.  Part B is optional. You keep Part A and in most cases it becomes your secondary hospital insurance.

If your are not drawing Social Security, and want to enter Medicare at age 65, then you will need to enroll in Parts A and B three months prior to your 65th birth month.  This can be done on line by going to www.medicare.gov and you will be directed to the enrollment site.  Or, you can enroll at your nearest Social Security office.

Once you are enrolled, you will need a Medigap and prescription plan.  Allow at least two months lead time prior to your effective date of Medicare coverage.  Too often clients wait until the last minute and it creates some difficulties to get all the paperwork done on time.

Summary:
1. If you are drawing Social Security prior to Age 65 you are automatically enrolled in Parts A & B.

2. If you are not drawing Social Security  you need to enroll in A ∧ B.

3. If you are automatically enrolled and want to keep working and receive benefits under your group insurance, then you need to dis enroll form Medicare Part B.
